Did you Know?
The trumpet has an enduring history. It is supposed that the trumpet was used as a signaling device in Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt and the Near East. In Ancient times, people used paraphernalia such as shells or animal horns as a trumpet. There are even drawings of trumpets in King Tut's tomb. The trumpet was also adopted for spiritual purposes by the Israelites, Tibetans and Romans and for spellbinding purposes such as warding off evil spirits. During the Romantic period, the trumpet was apparent in populous forms of art such as music and literature. However during this time; the trumpet was merely recognized as an instrument used to announce, signal, proclaim and for other appropriate purposes. It was in subsequent times when the trumpet started to be contemplated as a musical instrument.
14th - 15th century - The trumpet obtained its folded form. It was introduced as the natural trumpet and sounded out with harmonious tones. Additionally, the tromba da tirarsi surfaced, which was an instrument that was fitted with a single slide on the mouth pipe to produce chromatic scale.
16th century - The trumpet was used both in both military and courtly occasions. During this period in Germany, trumpet making began to metamorphose. Before the end of this period, the use of the trumpet for musical pieces began. In the beginning, the low register of the trumpet was used. Later on, musicians began to utilize the higher pitches of the trumpet’s harmonics.
17th - 18th century - The trumpet was at its height and was adopted by many famous composers such as Mozart's father Leopold and Haydn's brother Michael in their musical compositions. The trumpet of this era was in the key of D or C when used for courtly purposes and in the key of E or F when blown by the military. Musicians of this century played expressly in different registers. In 1814, valves were added to the trumpet to allow it to evenly play the chromatic scale.
19th century - The trumpet was now recognized and celebrated as an orchestral instrument. The trumpet of this century was in the key of F and had crooks for the lower keys. The trumpet continued to evolve with enhancements such as the slide mechanism that had been undertaken since the 1600s. In successive years, the crooks of the orchestral trumpet were replaced by valves. Alterations in the size of the trumpet also developed. Trumpets were now easier to play and louder due to its various improvements.
