History of Jazz
1700s –The chronology of the jazz in America can be traced back to the era of slavery where slave work songs were created to share a story and pass the time.  A song leader would sing out a line and the rest of the workers would respond to his call.  Soulful songs called “spirituals” were also sung by slaves. These expressed their strong religious beliefs as well as their desire for freedom.  Both of these work songs and spirituals are part of the foundation of jazz.
1800s – During this epoch, America became the “land of opportunity.”  Europeans immigrated to different American cities in search of a better life.  These immigrants brought with them an array of musical cultures as well such as Irish gigs, French quadrilles and German waltzes.  The African American composer Scott Joplin combined these newly introduced European compositional traditions with the rhythmic and melodic music of the black sounds.  This style became known as “ragtime.”
1900s – In the 20th century, New Orleans played a humongous role in the jazz band music evolution.  At this time, the gentry of New Orleans hailed from many different cultures.  Musical traditions from all over the world began to unite as new pioneers arrived in New Orleans.  African American musicians merged European musical tradition with such music as blues, ragtime and marching band to create a fresh, contemporary style of music — jazz.
1920s – African Americans commenced migrating to northern cities like New York and Chicago in search of more suitable opportunities.  With them, they brought the sounds of jazz bands and blues.  Young Americans began to embrace this new style of music by listening and dancing to jazz bands and blues.  This expressed a schism against their parent’s old-fashioned viewpoints.  Young women, known as “flappers,” shocked their parents by snipping their hairstyles and sporting shorter dresses.  For the first time radios and record players were widely accessible in stores.  This spiked the popularity and growth of jazz music.  Jazz went from being played only in New Orleans to becoming a standard of the American airwaves and dance studios.
1930s – A new style of jazz, “big band swing,” emerged.  This jazz music became the most listened to music of the 1930s and 40s because of its highly spirited beat. Swing music began to draw people to the dance floor every night!
1940s – Many jazz musicians were drafted to fight in World War II.  Due to this, jazz bands were experiencing problems in finding musicians to play in the dance halls.
1950s – Television became Americans new source of entertainment.  As a result, many dance halls closed all around the country.  Rock ‘n roll was introduced through the many variety shows on television and budding musicians, such as Elvis Presley, quickly became the sensation of American teenagers.
1960s – The civil rights movement also had an impact on the jazz music scene.  African American jazz artists had long resented the white owned clubs and record companies that restrained their income.  Some jazz music artists decided to quit these establishments and manage their own jazz music.
1970s – Present – Throughout the rest of the 20th century, jazz continues to evolve and take on new forms of musicale.  The 1970’s saw the adoration of fusion; the 1980’s are known for acid jazz and its return to classic blues, and the 1990’s introduced smooth jazz and retro swing.
